Beatha agus Sláinte. An old Irish greeting wishing you a good life and good health. It is lovely to "meet" you.
My name is Keelin Fitzgerald, and I am a Deepak Chopra Centre Meditation instructor. I live in Kildare, Ireland with my husband and two sons but was brought up in County Cork, just two hours away, by my amazing parents along with three siblings. I have always loved the outdoors, camping being the summer holiday of choice for my parents. My favourite spot now is the one shown in the home page; sitting on our boat in West Cork looking out over Bantry Bay.
Though I spent over 20 years working in banking, my true interest has always been in Wellness and the holistic approach to life. I studied many courses in this area, including reflexology, reiki and massage, and it was only when I started my studies with the Chopra centre that so many links in the chain came together.
Like everyone, there is always a reason for looking for more, for questioning the meaning of your life. For me it was being diagnosed with Crohns disease in my early 20's and listening to doctors preparing me for a life of hospital stays and feeling unwell. It transpired that I was allergic to all the medication used to treat the disease then, so I had to find an alternative. It was a blessing in disguise. This "alternative" came in the form of a local man name Paddy Crowe, my guru, who introduced me to meditation, the concept of living in the Now, and eating the proper diet! I still remember the letter from my consultant congratulating me on being in remission, and to carry on doing whatever I was doing. Remission is the key word here. I didn't know then, but understand now, that for me it meant if you let things slip, the disease will return. As the years passed, I allowed myself take on the stresses of the job, got careless with my diet, took on the pointless worries that all mothers do, and before I knew it, I could feel the old symptoms return. It was a wake up call. Back to managing the stress and reducing anxiety with my daily meditation, and good health was restored.
What caught me by surprise was the menopause more recently. It was probably because I was the first of my friends to go through it, that I didn't know what was going on, with my mind and body. I felt I was out of control, I even started to experience panic attacks. That is when I decided that I never wanted to go back. I needed to change my lifestyle completely so that I was living this stress-less life rather than dipping in and out of it.
I remember an afternoon walk in the college grounds near my home, when it came to me, out of the blue, "I would love to be a meditation teacher". When I returned home from my walk, I opened my email on my phone, and couldn't believe my eyes when there was an email from the Chopra Centre, "How to Become a Meditation Teacher".
Now, I am not saying that was divine intervention, I had been following Deepak Chopra for a while and had enjoyed his You Tube videos, but it was the gut feeling I got to follow up on it.
And it is said that the best way to keep improving in something is to teach it,and learn together.
Welcome to the journey!
